Shelf Elf is busy at The Grove

The Elder Grove Shelf Elf has been very busy lately. He has given out the Shelf Elf Award to many classes the last 2 months. Last week, Mrs. McMorris's class was so neat and tidy they cleaned up both the computer lab and the library without even being reminded! This week the award goes to Mrs. Kangas's class as they were running very short of time, but made sure that they checked the lab and stacked the chairs. There was excellent team work happening last Monday at 3:00. The Shelf Elf says Thank You and he could not keep the library neat without you :)

Open House/ Book Fair a huge success!

We exceeded our $3000 goal by $400 during our Scholastic Book Fair on Thursday night. Our Open House was very well attended and the gym was packed with anxious readers all evening. We will be able to add over $2,000 worth of books to the library from the earnings of this fair. Was there a book at the book fair that you wanted to read, but were unable to purchase? Is there a new book out that we do not have in the Elder Grove Library that you would like to read? If so, please reply to this blog with the information so that I can try to purchase it for our library. Remember, if you want to see if the book is on AR and what level and points the book is worth, go to http://www.arbookfinder.com/default.aspx.

We had a fantastic time with Ben Mikaelsen on Friday! The students from Elysian, Canyon Creek and Elder Grove where respectful and excellent listeners. Kudos to you all! I will try to put the video of the Kindergarden, First and Second grader's story on the website. The teachers are curious to know how you liked his presentation and what you learned. Add a comment please. Remember to use your first name only .

Many of you responded with interest to J.K. Rowlings too. Did you know that she wrote the first book on paper while sitting in the Elephant House Restaurant with her baby sleeping next to her? The restaurant sits above the graveyard that contains the tombstones with Tom Riddle and McGonagall's names. This is the view from the window. That is Edinburgh Castle in the background. We went on two tours in Edinburgh: one in the daytime through both the old and new parts of the city, and one at night through some graveyards and up to a hill overlooking the water. Most of the buildings are stone and the streets are cobblestone. We stayed in a Hostel and had Starbucks for breakfast.

I am so excited for I love to Read Month!
To begin, I will be working on my own personal environmental footprint. The habit that I will be trying to form is to always use my reusable bags in the grocery store. I will be thinking of ways to help others to remember their bags, as I have had many people say that they have difficulty remembering to bring in their bags too.
